Chapter Twenty-Six

MARI

* * *

The SUV pulled up to the back of the physical therapy building and Remi reached to open the door.

I touched his arm and he looked at me.

“We’re doing okay here, right?” I whispered.

“What do you mean by that?”

I shrugged my shoulders. “We haven’t talked much about my parents’ house. About Cassia. And Stewart. Everything that happened.”

“Not sure what happened,” Remi said with a little grin. “I think I kicked your brother-in-law’s ass. With one functional arm. I mean, if that guy couldn’t get hard on a good day, imagine him now. I almost feel bad.”

I laughed. “In some strange way, that’s kind of romantic. I’m sorry my family is like that, Remi. Daniel is like that. He puts that fear and competition into your head. That’s how Cassia and I grew up after our father passed away. Cassia was so good at drawing and designing. She went into doing dresses. And then I…”

My voice trailed off.

Why am I telling him this right now? He’s about to go into physical therapy.

“I’m sorry, Remi,” I said. “I don’t know why this is pouring out of my mouth.”

“I don’t mind,” he said. “Beats the hell out of going in there.”

“Well, I’m not going to miss this.”

“What?”

“I’m coming in with you, Remi.”

“Listen, babe, you don’t have-”

“I’m your caring wife,” I said. “I have to check on my man. I’ll hold your hand while you get tortured.”

Remi gritted his teeth, knowing arguing with me was a waste of time.

I kind of loved when his jaw tightened and flexed.

I never met a man who was just so commanding and sexy all the time, yet had these little subtle ways of being even sexier.

We both climbed out of the SUV and I hurried to get ahead of Remi so I could hold the door for him to go inside the building.

He wasn’t a fan of that.

From the back door we walked down a hallway to a large, brown door.

Remi opened that door and we stepped out to the main floor of the physical therapy center.

My eyes went right to the reception area.

The same woman from when I showed off my jealous side stood up.

She smiled when she saw Remi. That smile vanished when she saw me.

In fact, she swallowed hard and looked away.

“That’s your doing,” Remi whispered to me.

“Good,” I whispered back. “Nobody is going to grab on my man.”

“Remi, she’s ready for you now,” the woman called out.

As I turned my head, here came a short woman, cracking her knuckles, looking ready for a fight.

The word tough seemed to be written across her face.

The idea that a woman that size could torture Remi seemed illogical.

“Gloria,” Remi said.

“You brought a visitor,” she said to Remi.

“I’m Mari,” I said. “I’m his wife. Just wanted to say thank you for-”

“I don’t need thanks,” Gloria said. “I need results. When this big meathead is back on the ice, then I’ll smile. Until then, it’s time to get to work.”

My eyes opened wide.

Whoa. Intense.

Gloria turned and Remi and I followed.
